Royal Hampshire County Hospital
The Project
Volsen Ltd were appointed Principle Contractors for the refurbishment project at the busy Winchester Hospital which was established in 1868 and offers a full range of general hospital services including A&E, Surgical, Rehabilitation, Paediatric and Out-Patient.
The existing asphalt roof was showing signs of ageing and had received previous flash band and liquid patch repairs. Appointed as Principle Contractor, Volsen ensured that all Health & Safety on site conformed to the current legislation, welfare facilities were sufficient for the demand and subcontractor labour was managed to effectively carry out the programme as planned, to the minimum disruption of health care services to the public.
The Hospital was suffering water ingress to various parts resulting in the closure of some catering and medical wards. By using the specification compiled by Sika Liquid Plastics which followed their preliminary site survey conducted by Sika’s Area Technical Manager, we successfully applied the Decothane and Decaflex to the whole area as a complete waterproof overlay system, including various penetrations and upstand abutments. These products were ideally suited to ensure the waterproofing to such complicated details and provided a seamless finish.
The Hospital was an incredibly busy environment and we were mindful of the access requirements for the medical equipment and any possible emergency situations that might occur. We adopted our scaffolding to ensure that all hospital entry points had no restrictions or obstacles and netting was applied to the scaffold to reduce the risk of debris falling below. Special attention was also paid to the location of the site to ensure that our deliveries did not encroach on any emergency vehicle access.
